Recovery follows a fairly predictable pattern. Knowing it in advance helps you plan work, travel and events, and stops you worrying when the transplanted hair falls out, which is normal.

Always follow your own clinic's instructions. This timeline is general information, not medical advice.

Day 0 to 3

  • Tenderness in the donor area and mild discomfort; clinics usually prescribe pain relief.
  • Swelling of the forehead is common around days 2 to 4 and can reach the eyes.
  • Sleep with your head raised if advised. Avoid touching or scratching the grafts.
  • Most clinics schedule a check or first gentle wash in this window.

Day 4 to 14

  • Small scabs form around each graft and loosen with gentle washing.
  • Most scabs are gone by day 10 to 14.
  • Redness in the recipient area can last longer in fair skin.
  • Avoid heavy exercise, swimming, direct sun and helmets until your clinic clears you.

Week 2 to 8: shedding

  • Most transplanted hairs fall out. The follicles remain under the skin.
  • Some patients also see temporary "shock loss" of existing hair nearby.
  • This phase can feel discouraging but is expected.

Month 3 to 4: early growth

  • New hairs begin to appear, often thin and wavy at first.
  • Pimples or ingrown hairs can appear as hairs break through. Ask your clinic before treating them.

Month 6 to 9: visible change

  • Many patients see a clear cosmetic difference by month 6.
  • Hair continues to thicken and lengthen.

Month 12 to 18: final result

  • Frontal results are usually close to final at around 12 months.
  • The crown can take 12 to 18 months.
  • This is the right time to judge the outcome and to plan any further treatment.

When to call your clinic urgently

Contact the clinic promptly if you notice spreading redness, pus, increasing pain after the first few days, fever, or bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure.

Frequently asked questions

When can I go back to work after a hair transplant?

Many people with desk jobs return after 3 to 7 days, depending on swelling and how visible the scabs are. Physical jobs and helmets usually need longer; follow your clinic's advice.

Is it normal for transplanted hair to fall out?

Yes. Most transplanted hairs shed between about 2 and 8 weeks after surgery. The follicles stay in place and new growth usually starts around month 3 to 4.

When will I see the final result?

The front is usually close to final at about 12 months; the crown can take 12 to 18 months.
